Women’s Rights 360 — A Virtual Trip Around the World Kicks Off Today
Growing up in Finland means there are some basic things you learn to take for granted: free health care, child care, and tuition-free college education. It was not before I moved to the US four years ago that I realized how lucky I had been, and how the different ways of organizing public infrastructure can impact gender equality.
The latest push to think about gender equality and women’s rights globally came from our network of educators that use ThingLink. Students as young as first graders want to understand what’s going on in the news and why millions of women from across the globe are marching for their rights while others are not. This is a new issue facing educators at all grade levels, and we are hoping to provide them with this immersive field trip as a new way to inspire learning about gender equality and women’s rights.
I founded ThingLink based on the idea that contextual information should be easily available if you’re looking at a photo or watching a video. Some weeks ago, I sat down with our education team to see if we could help teachers navigate the complex topic of gender equality and women’s rights with a virtual field trip.
Everyone was up for the challenge, and we decided to use ThingLink the same way any group of students would:
- Research the topic and sourced articles about women’s education, healthcare, economic rights, political participation, and access to justice
- Discuss and try different strategies for visual presentation
- Edit short summaries of each topic
- Record narration
- Edit it all into an interactive 360 experience of each country
Being part of the production team and researching the different countries brought me to a clear conclusion: women’s education, healthcare and social justice globally should never be taken for granted.
Join us on this tour starting from Finland, and share your story #womensrights360 wherever you live!
